Trochanteric bursitis is also called hip bursitis, and it refers to any inflammation of the bursa near the hip that is between tendons and bone. Bursa prevent friction and are fluid-filled sacs. Inflammation of these sacs can cause hip pain.
How is it treated? First, try resting to avoid pain. Do not continue the activity or exercise that caused the inflammation. You need to let it heal. Apply ice to reduce inflammation and pain. This should be done for 10 min once per hour at least 3-4 times per day. When it feels better, if you are a runner, don’t run on uneven surfaces. This will reduce pressure on the hip bursae.
