Diverticulosis is a condition in which pouches or diverticula form in the colon wall. When they become infected or inflamed, the condition is called diverticulitis, which causes significant pain.

What are the risk factors for diverticulitis? Those who have a family member who has had diverticulosis, those who eat a diet that is low in fiber, and those who have used aspirin or NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) for a significant amount of time are at a higher risk.
